This video is an advertisement for the Dr. Pepper 10 diet soda. The advertisement is basically showing some typical hollywood style action and adventure movie scenes, and a muscular man as the main character. Interestingly, the ads explicitly says that the drink, with only ten "manly" calories per can, is only for men but not women who enjoy romantic comedies instead of action movies as depicted in the ads.
So, who do you think is the target audience of this video? What do you think is the main idea behind this advertisement and how does it relates to the product itself? How do you think the video is illustrating different gender roles? Do you agree with it? Why or why not? Do you think the advertisement is successful in promoting their product? How does the feedbacks on the YouTube page tell about public reception on the advertisement? Do you think traditional perception of the different between genders need to be changed? If so, how should it be changed?

Well, I think the target audience for this video is men, ages 12 and up. It is obviously not targeted towards women, as the slogan says. The main idea behind the advertisement is "Buy our product, it has less calories, but not less enough for women, so only men should drink this". It is clearly saying that women do not like calories, even if it is only 10 calories. The connection must be drawn between the calories, the drink, and the target market of men. Different gender roles in life are portrayed in this film, an example would be the fact that a stereotype is made that only men enjoy action movies, and only women enjoy romantic comedies. I completely agree with this generalization, and I think men and women are both different in a good way. I loved this advertisement, and being a man, I think I would buy this product. There are things that have been going on between men and women for centuries that will not change. Men should always be the aggressor, cavalier type, women should be the delicate, polite type. The gender roles have worked for centuries, why change them.
I agree with the fact that "it has less calories, but not less enough for women"; I think that that is the underlying message of the Dr. Pepper TEN ads. I do not think that the ads are a commentary on gender roles. Rather, the purpose of the ads and the drink is to simply make a "diet" drink that is not "girly", and to market it, they made commercials that appeal to men. This works in that they draw upon the somewhat terrible (yet funny to men) stereotypes of women.
I do think that the traditional and stereotypical gender roles need to be changed. I'm not exactly a feminist, but I do consider myself an anti-sexist. Stereotypes of women will most likely never go away, simply because women are more interested in and better at the typical "women" activities than men are. That part of it is not necessarily bad. Sexism, however, is something that needs to cease to exist, for obvious reasons that I need not explain.
I believe the target audience for this video is men, since they are trying to sell a 'manly' diet soda. I believe the purpose of an adventurous story line and continuous references to how manly the drink was, was done to try and increase the amount of men buying their diet products. Typically, women are the ones that are drawn towards dieting and staying thin. I believe the people behind this advertisement may have seen men and a 'manly' diet drink as an opportunity to make a huge profit, since men 'diet', not 'muscle supplement' drinks, are an untapped market.
Regarding gender roles, I see this commercial definitely conforming to traditional male and female traits. The commercial portrays the man as powerful, adventurous, and disliking 'womanly' things, like romantic comedies. The advertisement also assumes all women watching it don't enjoy the action scene taking place, and they categorize them with liking "romantic comedies and girly drinks." I, personally, don't agree with the message behind this commercial. I don't think that people watching this advertisement should feel that as a man, he should be tough, and as a woman, she should hate action movies. It's ridiculous to me. Not everyone perfectly practices the gender roles set forth by Dr. Pepper. To be honest, this isn't the first gendered commercial I've seen from them though, so this doesn't surprise me. I saw that some people on YouTube had a similar reaction to mine, which makes me feel justified. I also think that Dr. Pepper should develop a marketing strategy that is less gendered and sexist, maybe they won't receive as much criticism.
The target audience is men, clearly, like everyone has said. Clearly, some companies want to target it to a certain audience, although this one is very explicit and somewhat degrading to women.... although I don't find it degrading or anything. I think it proves the point in selling the product: it has all the same taste as regular Dr. Pepper with only 10 calories. Yes, I think the argument was very strong by singling out women, but that doesn't bother me. Clearly, it bothers the audience of Youtube because there are more dislikes than likes.
Dr. Pepper is not the only product guilty of singling out a specific audience.... yes although this might have been more extreme than the average commercial, it happens. I remember watching a report how Coke Zero targeted women and Pepsi Max was more manly and got the attention of men. Here is a classic example of another soda product doing the same way (even though it is a more implicit and less obvious/extreme way to say it). Also, Yoplait Yogurt commercials are very "girly." They are clearly targeted towards women and men eat yogurt too.... I think that the gap between genders is lessening, but there will always be a slight gender gap. Society should not be degrading towards men or women, but if people don't like the commercial, then don't buy the product, simple as that.
The target audience is obviously men. It states it explicitly. The main idea is to sell the product just like every other advertisement. I think the product is successful. They have a specific audience they reached out to and put they're name out there. They also stated a common problem men have with the over consumption of female products. I don't think the gender roles needed to be changed, they just changed them for the advertisement to try and get new consumers to buy their product.
The target audience for this commercial is men. There is no appeal for women at all. I feel that it makes fun of women since they are not allowed to drink it and they say "so leave your drinks and romantic comedies" The main idea for the commercial is to buy the product. Men usually drink more pop than women so it is a good idea my Dr Pepper to target men. The advertisement truly portrayed a man with the action scenes, big guns but also it has a healthier side to it. I feel that if I saw this commercial on tv that I would just laugh and think that it is rather stupid. For one, I do not drink any carbonated drinks and I feel that the commercial just makes fun of women.
At the first time, I feel this advertisement is targeting on men. But after rethinking the why they say that “the drink, with only ten manly calories per can, is only for men but not women who enjoy romantic comedies instead of action movies as depicted in the ads”, I think this ad is also targeting on women audience. How is it going to work? Antagonistic psychology, I think most women who watched this ad will disagree with what he says. Then what to do to fight back? They drink dr Peper to prove he is wrong. This ad might work, but sure it will be controversial and good for some new product which seeks publicity.
The target audience of this video is obviously men, as they explicitly state. The main idea behind this advertisement is to sell the product. Since women are usually more concerned about health and body image, they tend to stay away from caffeinated drinks. Dr. Pepper decided to appeal to an audience that was more likely to buy their product, which was men. The video definitely portrays the different gender roles. The men are shown with big guns and involved in action. It is stated that the women are at home drinking girly drinks and watching romantic movies. Personally, I don't get offended by this stuff. Actually, I kind of liked the video and thought it was funny. In my opinion, people overreact about sexism and get offended by little jokes. The reaction to the video on Youtube shows how easily people get offended.
I think the target audience can be for men and women. They're saying that there are 10 manly calories, which can be taken as 10 "important" calories. I could be wrong, but I also think that women are the ones that already mainly drink diet soda, which is the reason they are describing it using words like "manly." This could potentially increase their market, but it can obviously decrease it as well. Personally, I think this was a dumb marketing idea, but I could potentially see the upside of it. I really just wouldn't take the risk of potentially ruining the major part of your market.
I think the target audience is obviously men. The twist to that is that Dr. Pepper knows it will already be targeting women just because there are only ten calories, so they focus their effort on men. Some of the old gender role perspectives may need to be changed, but for the most part they are fine. The video shows that men like action and adventure, and things blowing up. I think the video portrays the difference in gender roles in an over-exaggerated, yet effective way. Whether you think the video is comical or not, the commercial seems to stick in peoples heads. Due to that, I think it is a very affective ad. I think women will still by it based on taste and calories, and men are more likely to buy it because of the commercial.
Like everyone else has said, this commercial obviously targets men. Though it could definitely be seen as sexist, I think that Dr. Pepper is using a clever marketing strategy to really appeal to men. By poking fun at women and using humor, the ad appeals to men. To be honest, when I viewed the video, I kind of wanted to try it myself just because the commercial was different from anything I've ever seen before. I think what led to a lot of the negative reviews is that the ad completely excluded women and poked fun at them by saying that they only liked "romantic movies and girly drinks."
The target audience is obviously men since this is a "manly" drink and it explicitly says not for women. The video is saying that men like action and being outside and this drink is for these type of people. It uses sarcasm to show how "manly" this guy is being as he is shooting guns and driving through the jungle. I don't think they were successful in promoting this drink because a lot of people find it offensive. It is basically telling all women not to buy their product which isn't a very smart idea. A lot of women drink low calorie drinks and the company is missing out on a lot of customers by saying this drink is "not for women"
Just like the others, I think the target audience of this video is definitely men. By showing those musculine action scenes, the advertisement links diet soda to men, and it probably aims to make men feel better when they buy and drink the diet soda. It could be that the advertisement is using reverse psychology to make women buy their product; however, the traditional gender roles of male and female are definitely being shown in the video. As shown in the YouTube page of the video, the public "dislike" this representation much more than they "like" it. This tells us that the traditional gender roles are slowly being left behind and more and more people chose to reject the traditional roles that they are assigned at the moment they were born. Eventhough men and women can never be equal- men cannot be pregnant and average women can hardly be as strong as men, the traditional roles where women should stay in the kitchen while men should bring home money and protect everyone is no longer relevant in today's scenario.
The audience is men but by taking such a manly stance the video also targets woman who will by the soda for their brothers, boyfriends or whatever. THe idea of the ad is to show that diet soda can be manly; to break the stereotype that says diet soda is for girls. I think its a great commercial. Its funny, fresh, and has a certain recognizable view point.
Gender roles will always be in our world because males and females are different. It is healthy to recognize and respect those differences.
Men are the targeted audience for his video, but still i am pretty sure that women might buy it. It only 10 calories, I guess the video is challenging women to buy the product. The main idea behind the advertisement is to introduce the product in a new non-traditional way to grab the audience attention, which is mainly the younger ones. because it's usually challenging for their point of view to drink something manly than a girly drink.think traditional perception of the different between genders is a good way to focus on what you wanna do to achieve.it saves a lot of time and effort to deliverer the message and it could be way to tease the other gender to try the product.
The target audience is obviously man, the main idea is about Dr.Pepper 10 is only for man. For a very long time now diet drinks were only for woman, now Dr.Pepper wants to change that. I saw in the video there is no women only man, and the video is trying to be like an action movie. I don’t think that is appropriate, I would drink diet Dr.Pepper regardless the commercial. The commercial want to make Dr.Pepper a manly drink, but I just can’t help myself to think that if I buy Dr.Pepper 10 then I would be disrespect to women. I don’t think it was a successful commercial, because I have tried Dr.Pepper 10 a single time since I saw the commercial last year. Most of comments on the YouTube dislike the video, and that means most of us knows man and woman suppose to be equal.
Obviously, the target audience is men. No denying that. I really don't like how the video says women only like romantic comedies and thus we don't like action movies, and can't like the drink. I HATE romantic comedies. I would rather watch an action movie, or see a slasher movie than watch two people fall in love. So that really annoys me. I haven't had any form of pop in 10 years so I can't say that I really care about this add all that much, but I do think it is a creative way to get the point across. I'm not offended by the add, I think it is kind of cool, but I still think they need to take into account the traditional perception of genders is no longer true.
I don't think the target audience is just men, I think the marketers behind Dr. Pepper wanted women to see this too. The whole point was to stir a reaction in women, whether it be positive or negative. If it's positive they'll buy it. If it's negative they'll probably still buy it. So overall, yes it is pretty successful in promoting the product. The feedback is pretty much what you would expect from the YouTube community: mixed reviews, some people being quite immature about it and some people taking a legitimate stance on it. I can't say that I agree or disagree with it because I think it's a successful ad campaign, but I can't go against my gender at the same time.
